FAQ

  • How is a Somatic Experiencing session conducted??

SE sessions are done seated in a chair or couch depending on your preference. You will be asked to share an impression of the sensations that you feel in your body, such as tightness, heat, shakiness, expansion, relaxation, etc. I will teach you ways to track, or follow, these sensations with your awareness and come to a place of rebalance.

  • How is this different from "regular therapy"?

This work is different from traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in that we are moving beyond just what is happening cognitively (ie. the meaning and stories that have been constructed around your experiences) and focusing more on what is happening somatically (in the body).

Because of this different focus, expect the work to feel slower and to include a lot of pausing. You are learning a different language. It takes time to become fluent in that language.

  • How long does this work take?

Everyone’s process and pace is different. I see this work as a liberation practice that connects you back to your own agency. My ultimate goal is to get you to a place where you need me less and less. The goal of this work is to improve the relationship with your body so you have more awareness of how you think, feel and behave as you show up to your life.

  • Does a Somatic Experiencing session include touch??

Somatic Experiencing is not a form of massage. I may offer you somatic touch support for the following reasons: grounding, containment, supportive, mobilization, or awareness building.

Consent is extremely important to me. You will always be asked before being touched and have the right and my full support to decline. If you do not feel comfortable with touch, or if the session does not call for it, session work will not include touch.

  • How much does a Somatic Experiencing Session cost??

Session rates are $125-175 per 50 minute session. Please pay anything within this range that feels appropriate for your financial well-being. Phone and zoom sessions are billed at the same rate as in-person sessions.

Please note, I do not accept insurance at this time.

  • What are the benefits and risks?

SE may offer you many benefits such as an increase in your ability to self-soothe, feel embodied and empowered. However, there may also be risks as with any treatment that focuses on healing trauma. Although SE is designed to help you resource and work with manageable amounts of discomfort, you may experience challenging feelings, images, or thoughts. Furthermore, as with any stress reduction treatment, there can be no guarantee that you will reach your goals. That said, many people (myself included) report that SE has helped them tremendously and has created positive change in their lives. Learning how to reorganize “body memory” is often vital to learning how to relax and calm your nervous system.
